Mirpur, Dhaka

Dated: The 8th June, 2013

Dear father,

How are you at home? Your letter brought some comfort to me in these days of anxiety and hard working.
Very clear speaking, I have made a fair progress in my preparation. But I mustn’t say that I am thoroughly prepared. Nobody knows which questions will be set in the examination. But nowadays I am a bit more confident because I have got a clear understanding of the nature of the question papers in the exam. Besides, I have read the text books thoroughly and explored every nook and corner of them. Moreover, the hot questions are already memorized. Mathematics, English and Arabic are in my daily practice routine. I believe I can do well with any sorts of question. Still some days’ time is in hand and I am checking my weak –point.

I hope I can overcome it successfully. Pray for me so that I can achieve an expected outcome.

Monohardi, Narsingdi,

Dear Kashem,

I have received your letter. From your letter I came to know that you are very weak in English. You have requested me to give you some suggestions so that you can improve your English. I am giving you some tips in this regard.

You know you are to develop four skills in English. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. For this, you must attend your English classes regularly. You should not cram anything. You must try to understand what you read. Without the knowledge of grammar, you cannot speak or write English correctly. So you should follow the rules of grammar. You should enrich your stock of vocabulary. For this you can read varius story books. You have to start conversing with your friends, teachers and other people also. Don’t worry if you make mistakes. This will increase your fluency in English. If you regularly continue these practices, I am sure you will be able to improve your English.

No more today. Wishing you all the best.

Take care of yourself. I look forward to your next letter.

My dear Jabed,

Yesterday I reached mother’s letter. Reading the letter, I’ve come to know that you are not attentive in your studies. Mother is very worried about your study. Nowadays you often go out and remain outside the home even till the evening. You know this is never good for a student. I’ve also come to know that your show a lack of interest in studying. But if you do not study seriously, you won’t be able to do well in the examination. Your scholarship exam is near at hand. So, your lack of interest in the study indicates that you are planning to adopt unfair means in the examination. This is extremely destructive and suicidal. If you do it, you will kill your future. You’ll not be able to get a scholarship and pursue higher studies. You won’t get any good job either.

So, from now be serious about your study and get prepared for the coming scholarship examination.

My dear Mahin

I have not heard of you for a long time. I hope you are well. Now I tell you about a street accident that I witnessed yesterday.

While I was going to college, an accident occurred near Gulistan. A boy was crossing the road. At that time a bus was running very speedily. It could not control its speed and run over the boy. His head was flattened and one his arms detached from his body. There was a pool of blood in the street. He died on the very spot. I could not keep looking at this horrible sight. It was quite unbearable to me. I cannot eat and drink since then. Please be careful when you cross any road.

With love to you. Convey my salam to your parents.

My dear Mijanur,

It is quite a long time since I have heard from you. During this period, I also did not write to you. Anyhow, write to you about an accident that took place before my eyes last week. It was about 3pm. We some classmates were on our way home from school. We were trying to cross the Mirpur road near the science laboratory. A young boy was also crossing the road. Just at that moment a truck was crossing at a great speed. The ill-fated boy noticed it but before he could go to the other side of the road, he was run over by the speedy truck. The truck did not stop rather it speeded away. I rushed to the spot. To my horror I saw that he was no more a human body but a lump of flesh. I was greatly shocked at this tragic scene. I could not forget the scene.

I am keeping fine. With best regards to your parents and love to the youngers.

My Dear Karim,

How are you? I am keeping well. You will be very glad to know that yesterday I had a train journey from Dhaka to Chittagong. Now I am giving you a short description about it.

The train was the Mahanagar Experess. It reached Chittagong in time. My father and I got on the train. Within a few minutes the train left the station. I had a very comfortable seat beside a window. So, I could enjoy the sights outside. At first the train moved on slowly. Then it began to run in full speed. I kept looking outside through the window. The train was passing through the green fields. Trees and houses seemed to run behind. I saw the farmers working in the field. Cattle were grazing here and there. I was the hills of Chittagong. All these pleased me very much. At last, the train reached Chittagong at 5 p.m.

No more today. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Have a nice time.

20 College Road,

Monohardi, Narshingdi.

Dear Mofiz Khan,

I have received your letter. From your letter I came to know about the result of your annual examination. Your result is not satisfactory. It’s a great shock to me. I know you are a good student and you are very regular in your studies. Still, you are field to make good result in the exam. In this letter I am going to give you some tips and suggestions for the coming exam.

At first, you have to attend your classes regularly and listen to what your teachers say in the class. This will help you to understand the subjects properly. Secondly, you have to avoid cramming as it won’t help you in time of your need. Clear concept about the subjects will help you to answer the questions properly. Next, you have to avoid learning your answers from a common source because the examiners often feel bored finding the same answer in so many answer scripts. I like in advice you to prepare your own notes consulting different books on the subject. You will then memorize them well and revise them frequently. Most important things you have to follow in the day of exam. You should not feel any tension or stress for the exam. In this way, I prepare for the exam. If you follow the above suggestions, I believe, you will certainly be able to do well in the next examination.

Convey my best regards to your parents and love for the youngers.

Smoking is harmful not only to health but also to finance.  It is a very bad habit that causes serious health risks both to the smoker and to the people around them. It has a negative impact on every organ in the body. It causes lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. It also damages the heart and blood vessels. It also leads to the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases. In addition, smoking weakens the immune system. So I strongly urge you to give up smoking for your betterment.

Dear John,

Take my love. Hope you are keeping well. This is to say thanks for your last e-mail. You have wanted to know about my country and about her people. Thanks for this kind of curiosity.

Bangladesh is an independent country. It became independent in 1971. Dhaka is its capital. It is a small country. But it has a large population. It is mainly an agricultural country. About 80 percent of people live in the villages. Its main crops are rice, jute, sugar- cane and tea. We export tea and jute and earn a lot of foreign exchange. Many kinds of fruits also grow here. Jack fruits, mangoes, pine apples and water melons are the most common. Bangladesh is a riverine country. The main rivers are the Padma, the Meghna, and the Jamuna. We have many interesting places. The Sundarbans, Rangamati and Cox’s Bazar are very attractive. The Royal Bengal Tiger lives in the sundarbans. The Cox’s Bazar beach is the longest sea beach in the world. We have also many festivals. Pahela Baishakh is the biggest celebration in which all the people join. People from different communities live here in peace.

No more today. Please let me know about your country in details. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Have a nice time.

Composition: A Journey You Have Recently Made/ A Journey by Train (Class 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, SSC, HSC)

A Journey You Have Recently Made/ A Journey by Train

Man is by nature fond of variety and changes Cowper says, ‘variety is the spice of life’. A journey by train is a very pleasant outing with a great variety. It is more exciting than a journey by boat or by bus. It relieves and a man from the monotony of daily life. It is more attractive, especially to the students. It is because it gives them an opportunity to escape from the daily routine-bound work and books and classrooms at least for the time being.

I had a prolonged desire to make a journey by train. At last, an opportunity came last year. It was the time of summer vacation. One of my friends invited me to spend a week with him in Chittagong. I availed myself of the opportunity with a half an hour before the departure of the train. The station was fully crowded. Hawkers were crying out with a shrill voice to vend their goods. Coolies were pushing their way through with heavy loads on their heads. However, the train arrived in time.

I become very surprised to see that there was a long queue before the booking counter. I had to join the queue to buy a ticket. I bought a second-class ticket and got into the compartment. It was fully packed up with passengers. I occupied a seat beside the window. The time was up. The guard blew his whistle and waved his flag. The train then started to move with a jerk. A gentle breeze came in and soothed my mind. I heaved a great sigh of relief. I found that some of my co-passengers were engaged in gossiping. While some were looking into newspapers and magazines.

The crimson the crimson rays of the setting sun produced a very wonderful view of the western sky. The moon was smiling overhead. The stars were peeping and shining around the moon like the swarms of golden Bess. I was just struck with wonder and felt like saying,

“Twinkle, twinkle, little star;

How I wonder what you are!”

I reached my station at about 8 p.m. I saw my friend waiting at the station. He welcomed me with open arms and took me to his residence. Thus, my journey came to end.

Though my journey came to an end it seemed that the time had passed away so swiftly. Let me recall the words of Keats,

“The day so soon has guided by,

Even like the passage of an angel’s tear.”

I felt, my imagination kept roaming about with my senses all over the passed-by way. Still, now, it floats up before my mind’s eye and gives me immense joy and pleasure. My feelings can best express in the words of the poet.

“I gazed and gazed but little thought,

What wealth the show to me had brought.”

It was really a happy journey for me. It added a new experience to the storehouse of my knowledge. It also let me understand well that experience is the best teacher. It is needless to say that the memory of the journey shall remain ever fresh in my mind.

"ঝিকঝিক, ঝিকঝিক, ছোট্ট তারা;

Subject: Road safety: Let's be extra careful!

Hey

How are things going? Hopefully, everything is well.

This email concerns a recent thought about road accidents. There has been an increase in road accidents, making roads dangerous at times. The main causes of these accidents often include over speeding, distracted driving (particularly due to phones), drunk driving, and disregarding traffic regulations such as red lights or lane driving. Additionally, poor road conditions and vehicle malfunctions can contribute. Accidents can have devastating consequences. Besides the risk of injury or death, survivors and their families may also experience emotional and psychological trauma. Accidents can also result in significant financial burdens, including medical expenses and lost earnings. Roads can be made safer. It is important to always obey speed limits, avoid distractions like phones while driving, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Helmets and seatbelts are also essential. Taking breaks during extended trips can also help with driver fatigue. By being more aware of actions, it is possible to reduce the risks associated with driving.

Perhaps this topic can be discussed further. Let's both commit to being extra cautious on the roads and looking out for each other.

Stay safe,

Your Elder Brother.

Subject: Stay Away from Evil Company

Dear Brother,

I hope you are well. Today I want to share something very important with you. You must always remember that the company you keep has a great influence on your life. Good friends will inspire you to be honest, disciplined, and hardworking, but evil company can easily spoil your character and future.

You may not notice it at first, but slowly the bad habits of such friends begin to affect your own behavior. They might encourage you to neglect your studies, tell lies, or even become involved in harmful activities. Once you fall into such habits, it becomes very difficult to come back to the right path. You will lose the respect of your parents, teachers, and even yourself.

On the other hand, good friends will guide you when you are confused and support you in achieving success. They will help you develop positive qualities like honesty, kindness, and responsibility. That is why you must always be very careful in choosing your friends. I hope you will keep this advice in mind and avoid bad company at all costs. Remember, your future depends greatly on the friends you choose today.

With love,

Your Elder Brother

Sub: Importance of Learning Computer.

Dear Jahid

How are you? I hope you are fine by the grace of God. How are your parents and grand-parents? I hope all is well.

I met your father and he was claiming that you are now in higher class and the studies are increasing. So, for that it becomes every father's duty to do the best for his child. He asked me for my reviews with it. Although I couldn't tell him as I was busy to submit my reports to the doctor for the monthly check up. So, I am writing the suggestion in this letter. Friend, I think you should insist your father to bring a computer for you. I know computer do have bad effects but it will be useful for you. If you have a computer, with a data pack you could be able to search in the internet the needs for your study and it will help you to clear your concepts and also give a big hand towards your studies. But if you misuse it, that can lead to destroy the goodness in you. So, beware about it.

I hope you will go through my suggestion and will surely think about it. Don't feel guilty if you don't get it, you can call me or write a letter anytime for asking any study difficulty I am ready to help you anytime, anywhere. Convey my warm regards to your parents and grandparents.

Thanks,

Liza
