Deforestation is the clearing or permanent destruction of forests to make space for human activities such as agriculture, settlement, industries, and infrastructure development. This rapid removal of trees has become a serious global concern as it dramatically affects the environment and biodiversity. Forests serve multiple functions—they provide clean air by absorbing carbon dioxide, maintain the earth’s temperature, support countless animal and plant species, conserve soil, and regulate water cycles. The major reasons behind deforestation include agricultural expansion, logging for timber and fuel, urbanization, mining, and infrastructure such as roads and dams. The consequences are alarming: climate change accelerates due to increased greenhouse gases, leading to global warming. Soil loses its fertility, resulting in erosion, landslides, and desertification, which lower agricultural productivity. Deforestation destroys habitats, pushing many species to extinction and reducing biodiversity. It also affects indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihood, culture, and survival. Disrupted rainfall patterns due to deforestation may cause floods and droughts, harming ecosystems and economies. Solutions to deforestation include promoting sustainable agriculture, enforcing strict laws against illegal logging, encouraging reforestation and afforestation, and raising awareness about forest conservation’s importance. International cooperation is essential, including agreements like REDD+ to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation. As future leaders, students have a vital role in protecting forests by participating in plantation drives, spreading awareness, and supporting eco-friendly activities. Conserving forests guarantees clean air, balanced climate, rich biodiversity, and a sustainable source of food and resources, ensuring the well-being of present and future generations. Everyone must recognize forests as essential for life and actively contribute to stopping deforestation to protect the earth.

বন উজাড় হল কৃষি, বসতি, শিল্প এবং অবকাঠামো উন্নয়নের মতো মানুষের কার্যকলাপের জন্য বন পরিষ্কার করা বা স্থায়ীভাবে ধ্বংস করা। গাছপালার এই দ্রুত অপসারণ একটি গুরুতর বৈশ্বিক উদ্বেগের বিষয় হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে কারণ এটি পরিবেশ এবং জীববৈচিত্র্যকে নাটকীয়ভাবে প্রভাবিত করে। বন একাধিক কাজ করে - তারা কার্বন ডাই অক্সাইড শোষণ করে বিশুদ্ধ বায়ু সরবরাহ করে, পৃথিবীর তাপমাত্রা বজায় রাখে, অসংখ্য প্রাণী ও উদ্ভিদ প্রজাতির সমর্থন করে, মাটি সংরক্ষণ করে এবং জলচক্র নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে। বন উজাড়ের পিছনে প্রধান কারণগুলির মধ্যে রয়েছে কৃষি সম্প্রসারণ, কাঠ ও জ্বালানির জন্য কাঠ কাটা, নগরায়ন, খনি এবং রাস্তা ও বাঁধের মতো অবকাঠামো। এর পরিণতি উদ্বেগজনক: গ্রিনহাউস গ্যাস বৃদ্ধির কারণে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন ত্বরান্বিত হয়, যার ফলে বিশ্ব উষ্ণায়ন ঘটে। মাটি তার উর্বরতা হারায়, যার ফলে ক্ষয়, ভূমিধস এবং মরুকরণ হয়, যা কৃষি উৎপাদনশীলতা হ্রাস করে। বন উজাড় আবাসস্থল ধ্বংস করে, অনেক প্রজাতিকে বিলুপ্তির দিকে ঠেলে দেয় এবং জীববৈচিত্র্য হ্রাস করে। এটি আদিবাসী সম্প্রদায়গুলিকেও প্রভাবিত করে যারা তাদের জীবিকা, সংস্কৃতি এবং বেঁচে থাকার জন্য বনের উপর নির্ভর করে। বন উজাড়ের কারণে বৃষ্টিপাতের ধরণ ব্যাহত হয়, যা বাস্তুতন্ত্র এবং অর্থনীতির ক্ষতি করে। বন উজাড়ের সমাধানের মধ্যে রয়েছে টেকসই কৃষিকাজকে উৎসাহিত করা, অবৈধ কাঠ কাটার বিরুদ্ধে কঠোর আইন প্রয়োগ করা, পুনঃবনায়ন ও বনায়নকে উৎসাহিত করা এবং বন সংরক্ষণের গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করা। বন উজাড় এবং অবক্ষয় থেকে নির্গমন কমাতে REDD+ এর মতো চুক্তি সহ আন্তর্জাতিক সহযোগিতা অপরিহার্য। ভবিষ্যতের নেতা হিসেবে, বৃক্ষরোপণ অভিযানে অংশগ্রহণ, সচেতনতা ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া এবং পরিবেশবান্ধব কার্যক্রমকে সমর্থন করে বন রক্ষায় শিক্ষার্থীদের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রয়েছে। বন সংরক্ষণ বিশুদ্ধ বায়ু, সুষম জলবায়ু, সমৃদ্ধ জীববৈচিত্র্য এবং খাদ্য ও সম্পদের একটি টেকসই উৎস নিশ্চিত করে, যা বর্তমান ও ভবিষ্যত প্রজন্মের মঙ্গল নিশ্চিত করে। প্রত্যেকেরই জীবনের জন্য বনকে অপরিহার্য হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দিতে হবে এবং পৃথিবীকে রক্ষা করার জন্য বন উজাড় বন্ধে সক্রিয়ভাবে অবদান রাখতে হবে।
