A Journey by Boat
Introduction: Bangladesh is a riverine country. In addition to the large number of big and small rivers, there are many lakes, bays, and canals, which constitute an extensive network of aquatic communication. So, steamers, launches, and boats constantly ply up and down these water-bodies and render a great service to the people. Boats are very popular for domestic transport. A journey by boat is relatively cheap and convenient. It is comfortable and interesting, also. The other day I had an occasion to enjoy a journey by boat. It was a journey from Raita to Selaidah in the district of Kushtia.
Preparation for the Journey: I had to take my mother from our house to my sister’s house. A boat was hired. There were a helmsman and two rowers in the boat. The boat had an awning. We left Raita at about nine in the morning. It was late September. The flood waters had gone down. The day was sunny. Mother remained under the awning, but I sat on top of it.
Beginning of the Journey: The boat left
the ‘ghat’ of our house, and we entered the river, Padma. There were many large
and small boats plying up and down the river. We were going downstream. We
passed under the famous Hardinge Bridge at Paksey. The bridge looked grand. I
marveled at the engineering skill of those who had constructed the bridge. We
saw two ferry-steamers carrying passengers and trucks to and from Paksey and
Bheramara ghats.
The Scenic Beauty of the River: The boats plying
with hoisted sails of different colors are a sight to see. We saw fishermen
with their nets in their boats catching hilsa fish. We were not very far from
the bank. Men were working in their fields, women bathing and fetching water;
children tending their cattle. Birds were seen flying over our heads.
Kingfishers were also seen diving into water to catch fish.
At noon, we entered the Gorai, a branch of the
Padma. We ate some sweets and cakes that we carried from home. We drank river
water. The Gorai is not very wide. We could see everything clearly on both
sides. Some men were fishing. As we approached Kushtia town, we found more and
more people bathing in the river. At about two in the afternoon, we reached
Selaidah ghat.
Conclusion: It was a pleasant journey. Mother and I enjoyed the journey very much. We paid off the boatmen. We also gave them tips and thanks. Then we began to walk. We had to walk about one kilometer. The walking was delightful, too. As I looked back, I saw the boatmen getting ready to prepare their meal.
নৌকা ভ্রমণ
ভূমিকা: বাংলাদেশ একটি নদীমাতৃক দেশ। ছোট-বড় অসংখ্য নদীর পাশাপাশি, এখানে অনেক হ্রদ, উপসাগর এবং খাল রয়েছে, যা জলজ যোগাযোগের একটি বিস্তৃত নেটওয়ার্ক তৈরি করে। তাই, স্টিমার, লঞ্চ এবং নৌকাগুলি এই জলাশয়ে ক্রমাগত উপরে এবং নীচে চলাচল করে এবং মানুষের জন্য একটি দুর্দান্ত পরিষেবা প্রদান করে। অভ্যন্তরীণ পরিবহনের জন্য নৌকাগুলি খুবই জনপ্রিয়। নৌকা ভ্রমণ তুলনামূলকভাবে সস্তা এবং সুবিধাজনক। এটি আরামদায়ক এবং আকর্ষণীয়ও। অন্য দিন আমি নৌকা ভ্রমণ উপভোগ করার সুযোগ পেয়েছিলাম। এটি ছিল কুষ্টিয়া জেলার রায়তা থেকে সেলাইদহ পর্যন্ত একটি যাত্রা।
ভ্রমণের প্রস্তুতি: আমাকে আমার মাকে আমাদের বাড়ি থেকে আমার বোনের বাড়িতে নিয়ে যেতে হয়েছিল। একটি নৌকা ভাড়া করা হয়েছিল। নৌকায় একজন কর্ণধার এবং দুজন নৌকাচালক ছিলেন। নৌকাটিতে একটি ছাউনি ছিল। আমরা সকাল নয়টার দিকে রায়তা ছেড়েছিলাম। সেপ্টেম্বরের শেষের দিকে ছিল। বন্যার জল নেমে গিয়েছিল। দিনটি রোদ ছিল। মা ছাউনির নীচে ছিলেন, কিন্তু আমি তার উপরে বসেছিলাম।
যাত্রা শুরু: নৌকাটি আমাদের বাড়ির 'ঘাট' ছেড়ে পদ্মা নদীতে প্রবেশ করল। নদীর উপর দিয়ে অনেক ছোট-বড় নৌকা চলাচল করছিল। আমরা ভাটিতে যাচ্ছিলাম। আমরা পাকশীর বিখ্যাত হার্ডিঞ্জ সেতুর নিচ দিয়ে পার হয়ে গেলাম। সেতুটি দেখতে অসাধারণ লাগছিল। যারা সেতুটি নির্মাণ করেছিলেন তাদের প্রকৌশল দক্ষতা দেখে আমি অবাক হয়েছিলাম। আমরা দুটি ফেরি-স্টিমার দেখতে পেলাম যা যাত্রী এবং ট্রাক পাকশী এবং ভেড়ামারা ঘাটে নিয়ে যাচ্ছিল।
নদীর মনোরম সৌন্দর্য: বিভিন্ন রঙের পাল নিয়ে নৌকাগুলি চলাচল করা এক দর্শনীয় দৃশ্য। আমরা জেলেদের তাদের নৌকায় জাল নিয়ে ইলিশ মাছ ধরতে দেখেছি। আমরা তীর থেকে খুব বেশি দূরে ছিলাম না। পুরুষরা তাদের ক্ষেতে কাজ করছিল, মহিলারা স্নান করছিল এবং জল আনছিল; শিশুরা তাদের গবাদি পশুর যত্ন নিচ্ছিল। আমাদের মাথার উপর দিয়ে পাখি উড়তে দেখা গেল। মাছ ধরার জন্য মাছ ধরার জন্য মাছ ধরার জন্য মাছ ধরার জন্য কিংফিশারদেরও জলে ঝাঁপ দিতে দেখা গেল।
দুপুরে, আমরা পদ্মার একটি শাখা গড়াইতে প্রবেশ করলাম। আমরা বাড়ি থেকে আনা কিছু মিষ্টি এবং কেক খেয়েছিলাম। আমরা নদীর জল পান করেছি। গড়াই খুব একটা প্রশস্ত নয়। আমরা উভয় পাশে সবকিছু স্পষ্ট দেখতে পাচ্ছিলাম। কিছু লোক মাছ ধরছিল। কুষ্টিয়া শহরের কাছে পৌঁছানোর সাথে সাথে আমরা নদীতে স্নান করতে থাকা আরও বেশি লোককে দেখতে পেলাম। দুপুর প্রায় দুইটার দিকে আমরা সেলাইদহ ঘাটে পৌঁছালাম।
উপসংহার: এটি একটি মনোরম ভ্রমণ ছিল। মা এবং আমি ভ্রমণটি খুব উপভোগ করেছি। আমরা মাঝিদের টাকা দিয়েছিলাম। আমরা তাদের টিপস এবং ধন্যবাদও দিয়েছিলাম। তারপর আমরা হাঁটতে শুরু করলাম। আমাদের প্রায় এক কিলোমিটার হাঁটতে হয়েছিল। হাঁটাও আনন্দদায়ক ছিল। পিছনে ফিরে তাকাতেই দেখলাম মাঝিরা তাদের খাবার তৈরি করার জন্য প্রস্তুত হচ্ছে।
